The 80th Annual Nisei Week Returns to Little Tokyo, Aug 13-21

Celebrate Japanese and Japanese American heritage and traditions during the 80th annual Nisei Week Japanese Festival, one of Los Angeles’ largest Japanese cultural experiences, taking place Saturday, August 13 through Sunday, August 21.

As one of the nation’s longest-running multi-weekend ethnic festivals, Nisei Week pays homage to those who blazed the trail for Japanese-American tradition within the vibrant city of Los Angeles during two weekends of free, family-friendly cultural events, interactive activities, live music, and more. 

NISEI WEEK SCHEDULE
Coronation
Saturday, August 13, 11 a.m. - 6 p.m. | Aratani Theatre
Experience the crowning of the 2022 Nisei Week Queen. The Nisei Week court candidates will show off the results of their training and vie to be crowned the 2022 Nisei Week Queen.

Cultural Exhibits 
Saturday, August 13, 3 - 4 p.m. | JACCC 
Enjoy rich Japanese culture by viewing collected Japanese objects such as bonsai, calligraphy, Ikebana, and more will be on display inside the JACCC.

Grand Parade
Sunday, August 14, 4 - 6 p.m. | Little Tokyo
Stop by and visit one of the largest Japanese American parades in the country. The streets of Little Tokyo will be filled with Japanese dancers, displays of vibrant colors, festive music, talented musicians, floats, and more. 

Awards Dinner
Sunday, August 14, 6- 8:30 p.m. | Double Tree by Hilton
The community of Little Tokyo will be recognizing community individuals who go above and beyond – including Frances K. Hashimoto community service honorees, inspiration award honorees, and grand parade marshals.

Pioneer Luncheon & Spirit Awards
Wednesday, August 17, 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. | Double Tree by Hilton
A gathering to honor our friends and leaders in the Southern California Japanese American community.

Plaza Festival 
Saturday, August 20, 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. | JACCC Plaza
In partnership with the Japanese American Cultural & Community Center, gather at the plaza and enjoy live music, acts, Japanese delicacies, and more. 

Cultural Exhibits 
Saturday, August 20,  11 a.m. - 4 p.m.  & Sunday, August 21, 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. | JACCC

Taiko Gathering
Sunday, August 21, 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. | JACCC Plaza
Take a front seat and enjoy the art of Taiko drumming by groups from Southern California.

Ondo Public Street Dancing & Closing Ceremony
Sunday, August 21, 4:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. |  1st Street
The public is invited to join Nisei Week’s finale – the Japanese tradition of dancing in the street with live entertainment to close out the annual festival.

ADDITIONAL LITTLE TOKYO EVENTS
JANM 2022 Natsumatsuri (Summer Family Festival)
Saturday, August 13, 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. | Japanese American National Museum
Enjoy the Natsumatsuri Family Festival, an annual summer celebration featuring free cultural performances, crafts, and activities for families and kids of all ages! This event is free, but RSVPs are requested. Those who RSVP and show their ticket at the JANM membership table at the Natsumatsuri Family Festival will be entered into a drawing for a one-year JANM family/dual level membership. Go Little Tokyo Pop-up Shop
Sunday, August 14, 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. | Yoboseyo Superette
Show off your Little Tokyo love and shop for exclusive Little Tokyo merchandise including enamel pins, t-shirts, and more. Proceeds benefit the Little Tokyo Community Council.
