Sugar ‘n Spice the Original Frozen Banana Shop Ships Nationwide

July 06, 2021

Balboa Island’s beloved Sugar ‘n Spice, the Original Frozen Banana Shop, is going strong this summer. They also just partnered up with Goldbelly and are shipping their iconic treats nationwide. Now you can order your favorite treats and send them to friends and family just about anywhere. ️

As the story goes, Sugar ‘n Spice’s Frozen Bananas were invented by accident in the 1940s when owners Bob and Dot Cook’s 12-year-old son, Don, accidentally stuck some bananas in the freezer instead of the fridge. Instead of being thrown out, they dunked them in chocolate and rolled them in toffee crumbs, and a legend was born.

To this day, visitors still line up to sample their Frozen Bananas and Balboa Bars (chocolate-covered ice cream on a stick), both rolled in a huge variety of toppings. The old-school ice cream shop is owned and run by Courtney & Will Alovis, who took over the business their family has owned for over 26 years, and who are always striving to improve upon perfection. For the first time, Sugar ’n Spice’s famed Frozen Bananas & Balboa Bars are shipping nationwide here.

The creamy and delicious 100% real vanilla and Dutch chocolate ice cream Balboa Bars are hand-dipped in either Classic Non-Dairy Chocolate or Premium Dark Chocolate, and rolled in a wonderful selection of toppings!

To make their signature frozen bananas, Sugar ’n Spice freezes fresh bananas at peak ripeness, then hand-dips them in either Classic Non-Dairy Chocolate or Premium Dark Chocolate. These are then rolled in rainbow sprinkles, chopped peanuts, crushed Oreos, diced almonds, and toasted coconut.
