Los Rios Historic District

November 14, 2021

Take a step back in time by strolling through the Los Rios Historic District in San Juan Capistrano directly across the railroad tracks from the Capistrano Depot. Did you know it’s reported to be the oldest neighborhood in the state with buildings dating back to 1774? It’s just around the corner from Mission San Juan Capistrano and Mission Basilica arguably one of the most beautiful churches in the county.

In fact, thirty-one of the buildings on Los Rios Street and the surrounding area are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. My favorite spots include the Hidden House Coffee shop, serving premium coffee to coffee enthusiasts, Casa Mia, a romantic cottage and garden courtyard to rent; and of course next door, the Ramos House Café. It’s the perfect breakfast/brunch spot where they grow herbs in the garden, store wines in the cellar and churn homemade ice cream on site.

Their seasonal menu features contemporary American cuisine with delicious Southern-influenced breakfast dishes like Huckleberry Coffee Cake, Southern Fried Chicken Salad w Pepitas & Buttermilk Dressing, and Vegetable Hash with Organic Fried Poached Egg & Sun-dried Tomato Foam.

Nature lovers will also love the butterfly garden and there’s even Zoomars at River Street Ranch, a popular spot for families offers a petting zoo, train rides, panning for gold & more.
