August 30, 2021

One lucky anonymous buyer holds the distinction of owning oceanfront Laguna Beach’s oldest home was built in 1883 on Pearl Street. The renovated historic beach cottage constructed from ship wreckage just sold for $5.6 million. The bluff-top ocean front property includes two three-bedroom 1,600-square-foot homes on a corner lot at Arch Beach.

According to grandson Tom Harper, in historical documents, the cottage was built in the 1880s as a summer home by his grandparents who were farmers in Orange. They built it from materials from shipwrecks that floated to shore.  His father, Thomas James Harper, a notable Laguna Beach architect grew up in this home. He built many distinctive period homes in the ’20s and ’30s.
