Let’s Eat at OC Fair!

The theme of this year's Orange County Fair, which starts Friday, is “Let’s Eat!” For us, that's the theme each year we visit the fair. We put healthy eating aside for a day (or two) and fill up on battered, deep-fried, jumbo-sized foods, and tasty treats served on a stick, in a corn husk, or try new items such as deep-fried Kool-Aid, deep-fried brownies, deep-fried Girl Scout cookies and deep-fried BBQ ribs. Also new for fairgoers this year are chocolate-covered corndogs, beer-battered bacon from the Deep-Fried Butter stand and icy sweets from the new Legendairy Gelato. Not to be missed…

Problem solved for those looking for a bakery that specializes in amazing treats that are free of wheat (gluten), dairy (casein), eggs, soy, and nuts.  Sensitive Sweets in Fountain Valley is a dream come true for vegans and everyone with dietary restrictions. Owner and baker Melanie Hohman developed the concept after her youngest son developed serious food allergies at just 9 months old. Pop-up Art in Laguna!

Peter Blake Gallery just opened a pop-up gallery in South Laguna, open from 6 to 10 p.m. Wednesday to Sunday through summer. It’s really an extension of his main gallery’s show, which explores trends in current California abstraction. OC Weekend: Appreciating Wine

Wine enthusiasts can join Orange Coast College’s wine appreciation series starting Monday at the Rusty Pelican in Newport Beach. Joe Poshek, a wine connoisseur and dean of Orange Coast College’s Visual and Performing Arts Division, is running the series on Monday evenings through Aug. 1. The two-hour session starting at 6:30 p.m. costs $55 per class and includes wine tastings and appetizers. Each evening will focus on a wine region or style, including France, Italy and Spain, wines of summer, and Australia and New Zealand. Participants must be 21 or over.
