Slapfish Opening, Free Lobster Rolls, and Recipe Search in Newport Beach

In celebration of Slapfish’s third Orange County location opening in Newport Beach on Monday, Feb. 2, Slapfish Chef/Owner Andrew Gruel is giving the first 100 people a free lobster roll, and offering the opportunity for one lucky person to have a restaurant menu item named in their honor. To enter, simply submit your own seafood dish recipe on Slapfish’s Facebook page. The winner will have a namesake menu item for two months at the Newport Beach location and can eat it for free each time they go to the restaurant. We Grew To Love Ruby’s Dinette

We were the first to lament the transformation of the nostalgic 1940’s style Ruby’s Diner on East 17th Street in Costa Mesa to a new mid century modern Ruby’s Dinette last summer. We wanted to hate it. Stripped away almost overnight were the nostalgic red vinyl booths, white Formica tables, and swing era theme, and in came a Googie-inspired look complete with light wood tones, lava lamps, and Warhol’s “Jackie O” and “Marilyn” prints that reminded us more of  “The Jetsons” than the iconic Ruby’s Diner that first opened on the Balboa Pier in 1982.   Now we can eat our…

Lido Live: The New OC Music Venue

Ever since the Lido Theater transformed from a movie theatre to a mixed use venue several months back, newly named Lido Live, Orange County has a new concert venue that also shows select films throughout the week. Cookie and ice cream lovers can indulge in even more flavors at our favorite Stax Cookie Bar in Irvine. It just expanded its menu of sweet treats., as well as new desserts such as ice cream sandwiches made with cream buns, similar to brioche.
