This Thursday, the Center for Living Peace will present Women, War and Peace and play host to the woman responsible for bringing the world's attention to one of this year's Nobel Peace Prize winners.
Academy Award-winning actress Geena Davis will join executive producer and filmmaker Abigail Disney for a discussion about the PBS SoCal series, "Pray the Devil Back to Hell.” The Disney documentary, which begins Tuesday and runs through Nov. 8, features Leymah Gbowee, winner of this year's Nobel Peace Prize, along with Ellen Johnson Sirleaf (now Liberia’s president) and Tawakkul Karman (a pro-democracy campaigner in Yemen). Gbowee is a founding member of Women in Peacebuilding Network (WIPNET), the interfaith movement of Christians and Muslims that played an integral role in ending the 14-year Liberian civil war.
Thursday's discussion will also include UCI Professor Roxanne Varzi and the Center’s founder Kelly Thornton Smith at UC Irvine.
Tickets sell out quickly, but you can find them at livingpeace.uci.edu. UCI students, faculty and staff are admitted free with reservations; general seating costs $8. At the Student Center at UC Irvine.
Fans of the incredible speaker series that debuted last fall remember that it featured Charlize Theron, Sir Richard Branson, and even the Dalai Lama speaking at UC Irvine.
