A Legacy of Artistic Innovation
Since her first performance on April 18, 1926, Martha Graham’s trailblazing style has revolutionized modern dance, leaving an indelible mark on generations of artists. Her uniquely American approach continues to captivate audiences worldwide.

This season’s program features both iconic classics and bold new works, including:

Appalachian Spring (1944) – Set to Aaron Copland’s celebrated score, this piece evokes the spirit of renewal and resilience in the American frontier.

Immediate Tragedy – A solo performance symbolizing determination, now accompanied by a newly imagined score from Christopher Rountree.

Adding to the program are two contemporary masterpieces:

CAVE (2022) – A high-energy, techno club-inspired piece by acclaimed choreographer Hofesh Shechter, created in collaboration with the Company’s dancers.

We the People (2024) – Choreographed by Jamar Roberts with a powerful score by Rhiannon Giddens, this work reflects on the ongoing pursuit of America’s promise, blending folk music with poignant themes of protest and hope.

As the oldest modern dance company in the United States, the Martha Graham Dance Company has redefined contemporary dance by weaving social, political, and psychological narratives into its works. Today, the Company’s innovative programming pairs Graham’s masterpieces with fresh creations by today’s leading choreographers, offering a vibrant and dynamic experience for audiences.

Praised as “one of the great companies of the world” (The New York Times) and hailed for its dancers’ “technical brilliance and artistic nuance” (Washington Post), the Martha Graham Dance Company continues to set the standard for modern dance excellence.
