ZURICH FOR EUROPEAN ROMANCE
04.04.11
By Sheryll Alexander
When planning the honeymoon or vacation of a lifetime, think Baur au Lac in Zurich Switzerland. Why? Because a stay at Zurich’s sumptuous and historic Baur au Lac hotel makes any couple feel like European royalty.
In fact, Zurich is one of Europe’s finest cities with everything you can imagine: stunning scenery (lakes, rivers, mountains), top-notch gastronomy, world-class museums, pulsating city and nightlife, loads of recreational activities and the ultimate in designer shopping along famed Bahnhofstrasse Street.
Plus, anywhere in Zurich is just a 10-minute drive away from verdant forests and breathtaking Alpine scenery. Honeymooners and vacationers can easily take quick day trips to relaxing and romantic locales such as the hot springs town of Baden, charming farms in the countryside and high Alpine mountain villages.
Baur au Lac, which is located just a short walk from the very cosmopolitan Bahnhofstrasse Street (think Rodeo Drive but better!), is a romantic paradise of its own as it is surrounded by a private park with fragrant gardens. This 165-year-old, 130-room hotel has classic 18th century architecture and recently completed a $14 million renovation complete with custom décor created mostly by Italian and French artisans.
River Suite Honeymoon Package
One of Baur au Lac’s most sumptuous and scenic suites is the only-one-of-its-kind River Suite (living room balcony pictured above). Part of the recent renovation, the 700 sq. ft. River Suite now features an incomparable view of the Schanzegraben River as well as a separate living room and marble-laden bathroom with deep soaking tub.
Priced at $4,712 per person (based on double occupancy and inclusive of VAT and service charges), the honeymoon package includes three nights in the aforementioned River Suite, plus:
Complimentary cocktail at the Rive Gauche or Terrasse restaurants upon arrival
In-room welcome package, including flowers, a bottle of champagne, strawberries and chocolate
A five-course meal for two at the hotel's Pavillon restaurant (excluding beverages)
Rose petal-filled bathtub
Limousine transfers to and from Zurich airport
Two opera tickets (advance reservation required)
One-and-a-half-hour boat ride for two on Lake Zurich
Complimentary access to the hotel's fitness club
Luxurious Economy Flights Direct to Zurich
What about flights to Zurich? Swiss International Air Lines has one direct flight on a modern Airbus 340 aircraft from LAX each day starting at only $738 round trip. Swiss Economy class (the same as coach) features an adjustable head rest, swivel ears, ergonomic seat cushions and meals (even vegetarian and children’s menus!) that include a variety of Swiss cheese with your hot meal. Each passenger also has a personal entertainment system embedded with a broad range of music programs, Hollywood blockbuster movies, TV series and documentaries that can be forwarded, reversed or paused. Before landing, you are provided with soothing hot towels and delectable Swiss chocolates.
