Kids of Kilimanjaro

You can support the Costa Mesa-based charity Kids of Kilimanjaro, which is providing a warm school lunch to 15,000 students in Tanzania by attending its incredible 6th annual gala fundraiser in Beverly Hills. On Saturday at 6:30 p.m. at the Beverly Hills Hotel enjoy cocktails, a silent and live auction and a gourmet sit-down dinner all while raising much needed funds for the students receiving the school lunch program. Special guest speaker Gov. Bill Richardson will give the evening’s keynote speech. Complimentary valet parking and goody bags for each attendee. This year, Kids of Kilimanjaro is offering a raffle prize of $1,000 cash. Considering a whale-watching cruise? Giant blue whales have been spotted off of Newport Beach for more than a week, and finback whales are traveling through the area too. No one knows for certain how much longer the blue whales will remain nearby but there’s a special going on at Newport Landing for a $15 whale watching through Sunday, Oct. 23.  Newport Landing Sportfishing is at 309 Palm Street, Suite A in Newport Beach. 949.675.055.

Whole Foods Market at Bella Terra in Huntington Beach is in celebration mode too. On Thursday, it’s one-year anniversary party lasts all day with special sales through Sunday. The event features local vendors offering samples from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.; a cake cutting celebration starts at 1 p.m.; or stop by for Champagne tasting from 5 to 8 p.m. During the tasting you can sample Champagnes, cake and cheese for just $5 per person. Chef Jenny Ross, owner of our favorite raw food restaurant in Costa Mesa, is hosting a salad making demonstration at noon on Oct. 15 at OC Great Park. Chef Jenny will be demonstrating a dressing recipe and sharing how to use different greens to make fresh, homemade salads.
