Newport Beach BBQ Competition Gets Serious

BBQ gets serious when the Newport Beach BBQ Competition returns for a Winter Q & Expo on Saturday, January 28 from noon to 6 p.m. at Newport Dunes Waterfront Resort. Fifty professional BBQ teams will be competing to win their share of $10,000 in cash prizes and for the title of Grand Champion.

The Winter Q attracts top BBQ teams in California and the region. Nearly half of the teams registered to compete are rated Top 50 in the CBBQA including Big Poppa Smokers, who is currently #1 in California (CBBQA) and #3 in the nation (KCBS), will be defending his title as Grand Champion.

Attendees can taste competition BBQ, local beers and wine, and vote for their top choice in each category to be named People’s Favorite.

Amateur and backyard BBQ Pitmasters can partake in free classes, samples and demos throughout the event.  You can learn about different smokers, wood selections, and how to identify the best meats, trimming techniques, insights on sauces, rubs and much more. Local Brew Masters will be on-site for a beer tasting of seasonal specials and yearlong favorite brews. The event also offers a full cash bar with beer and wine available by the glass.

Children 5 to 15 years old can show off their grill mastery skills in the Kids Q competition. Each child will receive meat (hamburger or steak), a grill, charcoal and a turn-in container.  Prizes will be awarded for First, Second and Third place in each age category (5-10 and 11-15).  Kids Q registration is $25 and includes general admission for the child contestant and one supervising adult.

Tickets to Newport Beach BBQ Competition are $10 and free for children up to 12 years of age. Food tickets to sample the participating teams’ competition level BBQ are available for $1 per tasting ticket while supplies last.

A limited number of special advanced purchase options are available online including ordering a full rack of ribs, cooked by local favorites Twisted Brisket and Smokin’ Harts, vacuum sealed and ready to take home.

Additional ticket options include:  Unlimited Beer Tasting for $35, which includes general admission and unlimited beer tasting from 12-4 p.m.  A Beer & BBQ Tasting Combo option is available for $50 (online only) and includes unlimited beer tastings from 12-4 p.m. and $20 in food tickets. A VIP Tasting Pass is available for $75 and includes general admission, unlimited beer and wine tastings from 12-6 p.m. and $20 in food tickets.
