Dyslexia Awareness Celebration

The inaugural Dyslexia Awareness Celebration, benefitting The Prentice School for Dyslexic children in Santa Ana, was just celebrated at The Port Theater in Corona del Mar.

Co-chairs of The Dyslexia Awareness Celebration, Angela Lee, Vanessa Tiffany and Diane and David Yrisarri, and more than 200 guests enjoyed incredible morsels from OC’s much beloved AnQi and An Catering.  Sweets where provided by another OC’s favorite Sweet and Saucy Shop. James Redford was key speaker of the evening and screened his film, “The Big Picture: Rethinking Dyslexia.” The film was moving and inspiring, giving way to some teary eyed guests as they understood the real struggles that children with dyslexia face daily.

James noted that 1 in 10 children are dyslexic and in Orange County there are approximately 740,000 children under the age of 18. That means we have approximately 74,000 children in Orange County alone that are dyslexic and only one school to provide the educational needs these children require, The Prentice School in Santa Ana.

Many children go undiagnosed for years, and are often labeled as lazy, stupid and suffer ridicule. And yet, dyslexic children are extremely bright and creative, they just learn differently.  The Prentice School provides that comprehensive learning environment for them, insuring them with a successful future.

A few of the auction items included the luxury fully staffed Meyer’s Ranch in Montana which was pre-sold, and as the ranch was generously offer in a second opportunity auction. As well as other items from a yacht cruise for 49 people to tank rides at the Oakley headquarters to a weekend at the Sundance Resort, generously donated by James Redford.

Through the generous donation of the guests and sponsors the event raised more than $100,000 for tuition assistance for The Prentice School.
