On Wednesday, Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach has arranged the first meeting between a donor’s family, Deborah Atkinson and Nick Atkinson, who donated the heart of husband and father Dusty Atkinson in 1992, and the man whose life it saved, retired Newport Beach lawyer Dennis Harwood. The heart surgeons Dr. Aidan Raney and Dr. Douglas Zusman who performed the life-saving transplant 20 years ago will also be there. The Orange County Register’s new owner and publisher, Aaron Kushner is giving local non-profits a very generous gift. He’s pledging $12.4 million worth of free advertising to local nonprofits to be chosen by the paper's readers. The Register is mailing all of its subscribers gold envelopes with a marketing check.  Readers can endorse it to the 501(c)3 nonprofit organization of their choice, and send it back to the newspaper. The Register will then award the total marketing dollar credit to each charity for use to promote their mission, their events or to fundraise in the Register.
