THE GURU OF GARDENING
Once you've talked plants with Gary Matsuoka, you'll know you've encountered one of the gardening wonders of the world.
He'll tell you, very patiently, why you have rust on your rose leaves, what to do about the worms eating your tomatoes, and why your avocado tree never has any avocados on it.
Matsuoka holds court behind his circular desk at Laguna Hills Nursery where he gives out free counsel on all things plants. Matsuoka, 51, is a self-taught gardening expert who learned on the job -- his parents started the nursery in 1969.
A former biology major at UCI, Matsuoka said his advantage (beyond 30 years working in the nursery) is that he understands the science of horticulture.
Matsuoka has also studied soils, and he said what sets Laguna Hills apart from other nurseries is their soil philosophy. So naturally Laguna Hills specializes in dirt, custom-made for the nursery to create optimum growing conditions.
