IT'S SLOW GOOD!
Contemporary Korean fusion dining just doesn't get any better than Slow Fish in Huntington Beach. One of our favorite restaurants celebrates its one-year anniversary Tuesday through Sunday with a special prix-fixe menu (priced at $20.07) to honor the year of the restaurant's opening.
Owner John Lee and Executive Chef Sean An follow the principles of the slow-food movement with their special menu of healthy, sustainable, local foods that are meant to be enjoyed at a leisurely pace.
The anniversary meal starts with traditional Korean seaweed birthday soup. Koreans have long appreciated the health benefits of seaweed soup (mi-yuk gook), considered a must for pregnant and nursing mothers.
The next dish, colorful Yapchae jun, is a large pan of paper-thin fried vegetables with three colors of bell and hot pepper, onions, scallions, carrots, mild cabbage and garlic. A sweet-potato flour pancake batter added at the last minute forms a sweet, chewy dough to bind the dish together into a large mat of crisp-edged, perfectly caramelized vegetables.
You can also choose the popular Slow Fish bulkoki or dancing porky and individual portions of the restaurant's signature special roll: spicy tail, albacore lover, bolsa or salmon cream.
And finish with a Korean-style mashed sweet pumpkin dessert.
And you can reserve a spot to attend a community celebration party on Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m. with complimentary appetizers and drinks. Reservations are required.
