VEGETARIAN NIRVANA



At Avanti Café in Eastside Costa Mesa you can easily forget you're at a vegetarian restaurant.

You can enjoy tasty wholesome dishes like a shiitake artichoke pesto sandwich, tofu tempeh Bolognese pasta and a pizzette with cheese garlic, shallots, olives, pine nuts and rosemary sea salt. All are prepared from fresh, local and organic ingredients.

Instead of preaching the virtues of a vegetarian diet, co-owners and chefs Mark Cleveland and Tanya Fuqua quietly let Avanti’s fresh and flavorful gourmet dishes speak for themselves to entice meat-eaters, vegetarians and vegans alike.

Avanti is not just a place to find healthy meals. You can stop in to buy a jar of freshly made jams or preserves; packets of fresh pepper blends, unique seeds and spice rubs; or even rosemary sea salts and aromatic scrubs. And for those in a hurry there’s a frozen case of delicious soups, cookie doughs, frozen puff pastry, sorbet, granita and even holistic dog food.

Avanti, which serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, offers a selection of fresh bakery items, artisan cheeses, herb focaccia sandwiches, soups, salads, bruschetta and pizzettes. Fresh bakery items and deli case items change daily.

Avanti also has lively nighttime events. Tuesdays is sampler night, from 6 to 8 p.m., large sampler plate is $12, and house beers are $2.50. Thursdays feature a cocktail hour from 6 to 8 p.m.; and Fridays and Saturdays from 6 to 8 p.m. is Margarita Madness. You can reserve a spot for the cafe's wine, tea, chocolate and cheese-pairing event on Thursday, Oct. 12.; popular seasonal wine and food tasting dinner on Sunday, Nov 5; and upcoming cooking classes.
