A TREASURE ON BALBOA ISLAND
When we first discovered Zschoche (pronounced shokee) on Balboa Island, it reminded us of a tres chic shop in Palm Springs, New York, or San Francisco.
Co-owners and husband and wife team, Michael and Allison Zschoche seek out hard-to-find, avante garde home furnishings (Allison's influence) that work together well with traditional pieces (Michael's touch). The fashionable Newport Beach couple only carry furnishings and gifts that they would buy for their home.
They're proud of their unique selection, eschewing lines even from the Pacific Design Center. They're one of the best sources for vibrant and sophisticated OC-based Shine Home, a lighting and furniture company that is a throwback to an era of fun, elegant glamour featuring white lacquered wood tables, table and floor lamps and fresh geometric angled upholstery pieces.
Here are our favorite finds at Zschoche. The artistic pillow selection (the easiest way to freshen up a room) are handmade, one-of-a-kind and, like couture fashions, they're seasonal. Dayna Decker Chandel candles burn with a wood wick that mimics the sound of a soft crackling fireplace. Hard to keep in stock is Marilyn Monroe's favorite cake mascara, Longcils Boncza, imported from France; and Marvis, Italian toothpaste with a great flavor that's creamy not chalky.
For a beautiful holiday or wedding gift, check out the exquisite hand-forged Laguiole en Aubrac cheese knifes, carving sets, and steak knives, some carved from mammoth tusks, Zebra wood, and ebony.
Toms Shoes is the cult-like shoe with a passion for charity. Purchase one pair of ultra lightweight Toms Shoes for $38 and the company donates a pair to a child in South Africa. And ask about the racy and artsy (not displayed) coffee table books. They're bestsellers.

THE PERFECT CHRISTMAS TREE
The 2nd Annual SOS Adopt A Family Festival of Trees -- the kick-off event for the 38th Annual Adopt a Family -- program will take place Tuesday through Thursday at the Hilton Orange County in Costa Mesa. Beautiful holiday trees decorated by a team of generous designers and dedicated volunteers go up for silent auction at the two-day Family Open House Tuesday and Wednesday featuring free events and entertainment for the whole family to enjoy.
