This Daily Dose is personal. My second of four boys, Tristan, was diagnosed 20 months ago with Type 1 diabetes. It was a life-changing experience for all of us, but there is good news. A cure for diabetes is on the near horizon.

If you want to help, here's an easy way. Prego Ristorante in Irvine is holding an incredible fund-raiser on Sept. 6 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. called "A Passport to Italy's Bountiful Flavors."

For a $50 donation, you'll be served a wine pairing with a classic Italian dinner, hear exciting research updates and be able to bid on luxury silent auction items such as an adorable puppy; Ketel One Vodka Ultimate Evening for 10; dining and entertainment baskets and gift certificates; BBQ equipment, and sporting events.

The evening raises funds and celebrates three years of care and commitment at UC Irvine Center for Diabetes Treatment and Research.

Orange County is fortunate to have Dr. Ping Wang who came to Irvine three years ago from Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston (affiliated the Harvard Medical School) to start the first Joslin Center at UCI. Patients at Joslin Diabetes Center at UC Irvine can expect the same world-renowned medical care the Boston center has offered for more than a century.

It's the only university-based, comprehensive diabetes center in Orange County and the only center in California affiliated with the world-renowned Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston.
