FALLING FOR WATERFALLS

The new Waterfalls restaurant at the Atrium Hotel in Irvine (across from John Wayne Airport) recently hired award-winning Executive Chef Theo Ioannou who offers sophisticated Euro-Mediterranean dining in a casual atmosphere.

Raised in London, Chef Theo Ioannou (pronounced: "Ee-wahn-oo") has quite a culinary background. He's cooked a private dinner at Kensington Palace for Prince Andrew, Prince Edward and Princess Sophie Rhys-Jones, and has also prepared deluxe meals for 1,200 guests on the QE2. At Waterfalls, Chef Theo prepares a seasonal menu (with health consciousness in mind) with the most flavorful ingredients available.

Waterfalls is open for a breakfast buffet, lunch and dinner daily (6 a.m. to 10 p.m.). On the weekdays from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. enjoy an extensive all-you-can-eat Mediterranean buffet (just $14.95), complete with succulent rotisserie meats or order from the imaginative a la carte menu. Other offerings include assorted salads, accompaniments, and mini desserts.

Waterfalls seasonal menu includes appetizers, salads, grilled sandwiches, pastas, entrées, and delicious desserts. Try the potato gnocchi with roasted artichokes, baby watercress and sun-dried tomatoes; or the petit tapas of hummus, tzatziki and marinated olives, served with grilled pita bread.

The prime New York steak and béarnaise sauce served on a French baguette with French fries is a favorite, as well as the olive-marinated chicken breast served in pita bread with tomato, cucumber, and feta garnish.

Entrées include grilled prime filet mignon, herb potato pancake, and wild mushroom sauce; pan-seared halibut, grilled vegetables, and oven roasted tomatoes infused with olive oil, lemon, and tarragon; and a grilled garlic herb porterhouse served with asparagus, red beets and feta salad and a baked potato.

Among the dessert choices: apple and raisin strudel with vanilla and port sauce; or warm caramel banana crepe with vanilla ice cream.

Later this year, the Atrium Hotel will debut iLum Ultra Lounge, with a lively nightlife atmosphere. In the interim there's the new iLum Poolside, a new concept offering cocktails, appetizers and outdoor dining.
