WORKS OF ART

The Vintage Poster in Laguna Beach is a great find for original European advertising and lithograph movie posters. It advertises itself as the second largest vintage poster gallery on the West Coast.

You can peruse posters in miniature (photo albums are displayed for easy viewing, separated in categories: theatre, Olympics, fashion, radio, rock, magic, wine and spirits). And if you’re lucky, owner Gary L. Gibson will show you the posters while explaining why each one is so special.

Gibson's collection includes a vintage false advertisement: a 1906 ad for a heating pad that guaranteed to cure rheumatism. Some of the hottest posters selling in L.A.: 1920s progressive posters from Russia, which go from $10,000 to $20,000.

"They're getting astronomically expensive," says Gibson. Most of Gibson's posters are priced between $1,000 to $4,000.

The Vintage Poster sells magnificent and vibrant colored posters from Paul Colin, Bernard Villemot, Jean D’Ylen, Razzia, and Erte, as well as original posters from Leonette Cappiello, a master of modern advertising and highly sought after by collectors. (Cappiello was one of the featured artists in the 2006 Pageant of the Master.)

And Gibson has one of the largest collections of World War I posters in Southern California.

Gibson's posters are primarily Italian and French, and most range in size from 36x50, to a large standard size—47x63. Custom framing is available too, and rare for Laguna, there's a private parking lot.

Open 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. 1476 S. Coast Highway in Laguna Beach 949.376.7422.
