A TASTEFUL NEW YEAR'S EVE

For a quiet relaxing New Year's Eve, try 50829, the new sister restaurant to the waterfront Le Quai in Newport Beach.

Owners Chris and Dennis Overstreet renamed and rethought Aubergine, which had been a special occasion restaurant. In its place is 50829, a casual neighborhood spot in Newport's Cannery Village specializing in small plates, artisan cheeses, and superb wines by the glass.

Wines are a passion at 50829 (the name was taken from the restaurant's address), a reflection of its owners' extensive background in fine wines. The Overstreets opened the Wine Merchant more than 30 years ago in Beverly Hills, and Dennis became known as the wine merchant to the stars. Wine Spectator listed him as one of the most important people in the wine industry.

At 50829, small plates include pan-roasted lump crab cakes, a trio of New Zealand lamb chops, or sliders with feta, blue cheese, cheddar and red onion. And large-plate favorites are flat-iron steak with peppercorn sauce, baby carrots, asparagus and potato; and crispy oven-roasted chicken breast with steamed garlic spinach and lemon butter, and a choice of side dishes.

On New Year's Eve a full bar opens at 5 p.m. Enjoy the dining room or heated patio where dinner is served beginning at 5:30.p.m. Early diners can watch a live telecast of New Year's celebration in New York City's Times Square.
