We caught up with our favorite vintage fashion curator, Newport Beach native Maddy Anderson of Madly Vintage. Today she’s LA based, but you can shop from her Instagram @madlyvintage and contact her for requests. Madly Vintage is a huge find for those who love hard-to-find fashions that you won’t see everywhere. "Vintage to me is an adventure and I often think basic and fast fashion is just too easy," Maddy Anderson said. "Vintage is fun and a challenge and you get to share your creativity and individual style which is the best part of all. Then the fact that it's great for our planet, what a bonus."
What do collect and what's your specialty?
"I collect vintage from all over and curate, clean, and tailor a collection the modern girl. I also meet with designers for print/design inspo. Past designers include: Brock Collection, Reformation, Revolve Clothing, Cleobella, Show Me Your Mumu, Novella Royale."
I would say I specialize in late '60s/early '70s but I have a soft spot for Victorian pieces and vintage lace crochets. Not necessarily the kind of Victorian you wear to a tea party, more Blue Lagoon vibes. I met a guy that has been creating beautiful hand crochet-lace pieces since the 60s, and I have a pretty large collection of his pieces. Some are true vintage and some are made out of his vintage lace and tablecloths, they're stunning and definitely my most popular pieces I'd say."
What inspires you?
"Old photos of Brigitte Bardot and Jane Birkin in La Pisine. It's so fun to imagine what life each dress, jumpsuit, even handbag must have lived - I always glamorize it in my head to look straight out of a Slim Aarons’ photo."
Your passion for vintage, where did that come from?
"My passion started young when my mom started taking me to antique shows and flea markets. I was always fascinated with the hunt and finding treasures. But I was so young I didn't know what to collect! I'd usually look for anything with shells or daisies and I collected vintage Hawaiian postcards. Which then turned into vintage Hawaiian t-shirts in high school, which then lead me to thrifting. I went to college in Tucson, Arizona and they had amazing thrift stores. So, after that the rest was history. I started collecting for myself, then friends, then other stores or designers. Soon I had so many pieces I had no choice but to start my own shop! Which was secretly my dream all along."
Do you have a store, or by appointmet only?
I sell directly through Instagram and host pop ups a couple times a month as well. You can also make an appointment to come to my showroom in Venice by emailing me at maddy@madly-vintage.com
