Musical Theatre West Announces Selections for 2024 New Works Program
01.05.24
Musical Theatre West (MTW), a leading musical theatre company in Southern California, has revealed its 2024 New Works Program lineup. The program will showcase "Broken Ground" (book and lyrics by Christine Toy Johnson, music and lyrics by Jason Ma), "The Dark Lady" (music by Veronica Mansour, book and lyrics by Sophie Boyce), and "Māyā" (music and book by Cheeyang Ng, book and lyrics by Eric Sorrels). These pieces will be presented in an exclusive festival in Long Beach.
"Broken Ground" first emerged under the Village Theatre's New Works program in Washington and has since evolved through various forms across the U.S., including a recent workshop at the University of Michigan's Department of Musical Theatre in May 2022. "The Dark Lady" underwent development at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre Center's National Musical Theatre Conference in July 2023, featuring Broadway stars Samantha Williams, Erika Henningsen, and Kyle Selig. "Māyā" originated at New York University's Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program and has been featured at the NAMT Festival and in the ASCAP Musical Theatre Workshop with Stephen Schwartz.
Since its inception in 2021, the MTW New Works Program has aimed to provide a platform for new musical theatre writers to showcase their work and gather audience feedback. This initiative began as part of Inclusion Media Company’s “Raise Your Voice Playwriting Competition,” and has since facilitated three 29-hour staged readings annually. Additionally, tickets are now available for MTW's 2024 Mainstage Season, featuring productions like "42nd Street," "Million Dollar Quartet," "Newsies," and "Ain’t Misbehavin’."
