It’s time to rethink tattoo parlors as a stereotypical seedy shop in a strip mall where you’d rather not be seen. In San Clemente, a group of established artists are changing the way people view tattoo shops at the new Living Art Gallery/Tattoo Lounge.
Founder, Monte Livingston (pictured above) has no visible tattoos, he’s painted his entire life (several of his ocean landscapes adorn the walls) and he opened the luxury, clean, and homey gallery where he and three full-time artists, Laguna Niguel based Zoey Stevens, Robert McCollum and Kevin Daniels, can create beautiful original works of art on your body.
Appointments start with consultations and sketches; this is not a tattoo shop where you choose the unicorn/rainbow on page 3. All tattoos are one-of-a-kind painterly creations from animation to fine art works. Tattooing costs start at $120 per hour.
Living Art Gallery will also hosts group art shows, including "The Panelists", a comic strip concept show curated by KRK Ryden opening on Saturday, Jan. 21 from 6 to 11 p.m. and running through Feb. 14. “The Panelists” cleverly tells a comic book story by a group of accomplished artists who were each given a story background and then created comic book art works. The story comes together on a panel, featuring artists including KRK Ryden, Mark Mothersbaugh (lead singer of Devo), Mitch O’ Connell (works featured in Newsweek and the New York Times as well as ads for McDonald’s and Coca-Cola), and Anthony Ausgang (MGMT’s recent album cover artist), multi-talented Zoey Stevens and contemporary artist, The Pizz, and many more.
Open 12 to 8 p.m. daily. Living Art Gallery/Tattoo Lounge is at 3107 South El Camino Real in San Clemente. For more information, call (949)294-6424, or visit sclivingartgallery.com.
