The source and treatment of your food is just as important as the taste. Tonight, at Haven Gastropub, six spectacular chef´s from Orange County are cooking up Foie Gras to raise money to support ethical farming practices and help repeal the Foie Gras ban which will take effect July 1st. Each chef, led by Greg Daniels, will create their own spin on Foie Gras. In addition to the dinner, Haven Gastropub will offer beer and wine pairing for an extra cost.
The event, “Fight for Foie”, will benefit The Coalition of Humane and Ethical Farming Standards (CHEFS). Chefs, principles are that all animals deserve to be treated with respect and the best foods come from using the best ingredients from human and sustainable practices. The coalition feels that it is their responsibility to make sure the food they serve follows these practices.
CHEF´s was recently formed in response to California’s proposed law banning the sale of Foie Gras. Critics say that the practice of gavage, force feeding ducks, to fatten their livers is unethical. They say it is not healthy or humane to inflate duck´s livers to ten times their normal size. Opponents of the bill, including CHEF´s, argue that the ducks actually enjoy being fattened up, and that ducks lack nerves in their throat so the force feeding causes no pain. On July 1, the sale of foie gras in California will be banned unless the bill can be reversed by then.
This might be your last chance to taste Foie Gras in California, especially cooked by such excellent Chef´s. If you would like to support the CHEF´s campaign to reverse the Foie Gras ban, tonight would be your perfect chance all while enjoying some quality duck liver.
Fight for Foie at Haven Gastropub. Tonight, May 14th, 7 p.m. 190 S. Glassel Street in Old Towne Orange. $80 per guest, does not include tax, gratuity or beverages. Cocktail pairings available for an additional $30. Space is limited, call 714.221.0680 for reservations.
