Lido Marina Village just opened another great eatery—after Zinqué and Nobu-- that is already one of our favorites in OC. Lido Bottle Works was created by longtime friends and family who came together to create a place where they can share their love of travel, great food and drink pairings. Partners Bill, Eric and Kyle Paine (father and sons) have worked together in Lido Marina Village for seven years. Eric is a board member of The Ecology Center in San Juan Capistrano, and is a driving force behind the mission and values of LBW’s sustainability ethos.
Kyle and Eric build innovative affordable housing for low-income populations out of their Lido Marina Village office. Partner Brett Karas, a Newport Beach resident, has longtime experience in hospitality, dining and nightclub operations. Partner Kirk O’Brien, a Newport Beach resident, has a background in finance and home brewing. “Most places on the water are either divey or super high end, there’s not much middle ground,” Partner Kyle Paine said. “We want to be that approachable public house with elevated and locally-sourced food.”
The restaurant —located on the marina, has a warm, luxe, nautical feel inspired by old California and the nautical history of the neighborhood. Some of the unique aspects of the interior design include: All wood table tops came from a naturally-downed redwood tree. The flatware--15 sets of Dirigold flatware—came from families across the U.S. The tiles were handmade in Long Beach, and the fabrics were woven in Mexico. The glassware for the cocktails is exclusively vintage 1930’s/1940’s coups and Collins glasses that were sourced for LBW.
Chef Joel Harrington — former sous chef to Marcus Samuelsson and Culinary Director of Harlem, New York’s famed Red Rooster — was recruited to create and manage LBW’s culinary program. He’s focused on local, sustainable foods, including ingredients from the restaurant’s Costa Mesa garden, the Santa Monica Farmers Market, and fish hand-selected daily from the Dory Fishing Fleet Market.
Favorites from the tapas-style menu include the Goat Cheese Fritter with ancho cajeta and red pepper aioli; Cauliflower with trumpet mushroom and golden raisin; Salmon Belly with bacon, clam and dill gel; and the Tuna Tartare with avocado and chili pop rocks. You also don’t want to miss the LBW Burger with bacon jam, black garlic aioli and wasabi brioche; and the Prime Ribeye with beef fat fingerling, leek fondue and shallot cream.
You also must save room for the Chocolate Mousse with sea salt and olive oil; and the Pineapple Upside Down cake with sour cherry and smoked ice cream.
Dishes are meant to be paired with the 15 beers on tap, specialty craft beer bottles, wines and vermouth-based cocktails.
Lido Bottle Works’ bottle shop collection is curated by LBW’s partners, who seek unique and exceptional, local craft beer. LBW sources limited releases from small breweries that don't distribute on a large scale. They also have 15 handles of draft craft beer and kombucha on draft, plus a full selection of bottled kombucha flavors from Blessed Booch of Laguna Beach.
The wine program centers on California grown grapes and winemakers who offer sustainably-produced wines, ideally with organic or biodynamic farming methods. They concentrate on small winemakers who are passionate about their craft and have a great story to tell, with values similar to LBW.
LBW’s session cocktail program focuses on original recipe vermouth-based libations. Cocktail offerings will change seasonally.
Open 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday to Thursday; 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
Lido Bottle Works is at Lido Marina Village, 3408 Via Oporto in Newport Beach. 949.529.2784.
