Daily Dose of Fruits and Veggies
01.06.16
Want to eat healthier in the New Year? Our friends at Melissa’s Produce offer the best and the latest in produce and organics. They are a great resource for what’s in and hot for the season. Melissa's can make your life more tasty, healthy, and convenient every day. Here are the hot new fruits that you can look out for in local markets, or easily order online.
Rambutan: (pictured above) similar to the lychee, the rambutan is less acidic and not quite as juicy which makes it easier to eat.
Melissa's Asian Pears are remarkably juicy and refreshing, with a mild and sweet pear-flavored flesh and a very crisp, crunchy apple-like texture.
Blood Oranges: Named for their deep pink or red-streaked flesh, these Blood Oranges are perfect for adding color and flavor to cocktails, dressings, marmalades and sorbets.
Cara Cara Oranges: Freshly picked from Melissa’s groves, these pink navel oranges are extremely delicious. The fruit and juice have a deep orange flavor with sweet-cherry flavored undertones.
Cocktail Grapefruit are exceptionally sweet and juicy. They are a delicious cross between a Frua Mandarin and a Pummelo.
Finger Limes. Unlike the tender juice sacs in most citrus, the greenish-white or pinkish sacs in finger limes are quite firm and pop on the tongue like caviar, releasing a flavor that combines lemon and lime with an aromatic hint of fresh herbs.
Kumquats are a unique member of the citrus family. They are small, egg-shaped, and can be eaten whole.
MeloGold Grapefruit are the sweetest of all varieties, making them ideal for eating fresh.
The Meyer Lemon is favored for its mild, sweet, juicy flesh. Although still too tart to eat out-of-hand, Melissa's Meyer Lemons are useful for flavoring both savory and sweet dishes alike.
Native to China and Japan, Sharon fruit, also known as kaki fruit or Persimmons, are typically eaten fresh, cooked or even candied.
Considered to be the sweetest, most flavorful of all Papayas, the salmon-red to pink flesh of Melissa's Strawberry Papayas is fragrant and juicy, with a hint of fresh peaches and berries.
