An Ode to the Denim Jacket
05.02.12
The ebb and flow of the denim jacket clearly revels how fashion reinvents itself decade after decade. Just when you think it's a relic, the good old denim jacket makes a comeback. In the 50's, it was popularized by the greasers, and in the 60's and 70's Janis Joplin and the hippies laid their claim, wearing it to peace protests and rock festivals (sometimes even pulling it off successfully with a pair of jeans), and greasers were all but forgotten. Then in the 80's, everyone wanted in on the jacket - the hair bands, the punks, the princesses (armed with their bedazzlers), and everyone in between. It became so synonymous with the decade that at 80's parties across America there is sure to be a solid denim jacket contingent. And in the 90's, Ralph Lauren borrowed the jackets out of the hands of the crazy kids, paired it with long praire skirts, cowboy boots and turquoise jewelry, and it suddenly seemed as though that it was always meant to be worn that way. Now, when we see them cropped and shrunken on models and actresses of the moment, we abandon all notions of the past and set out to stake our claim on the old classic once more.

1. If you had to begin a different career, what would you do?
This is a tough one…I’m torn between painting giant canvases, blogging, or becoming a midwife.
2.What’s your most prized possession?
My most prized material possession is probably one of my snowboards…The Method or The Sick Stick (it’s a tie).
3. Favorite drink?
Kombucha! GT’s Trilogy flavor is my favorite.
4. What are you cutting out because of the economy?
I’m lucky that all my basics and family-oriented expenses are still covered. But I’m cutting back on the fun extra stuff like sunglasses and handbags. Besides, who has time to shop when we’ve got a business to build?
5. Fantasy purchase?
Cool rims and tires for my “mom” car.
6. What can’t you live without?
Malia Mills bikinis.
7. What’s next on your “to do” list?
Fiji with my family and another heli-snowboard trip to Alaska with my husband.
8. Biggest regret?
I didn’t start doing yoga earlier in life. I’ve been at it for 15 years, but I’m still far from enlightened.
9. Cause that you’re most interested/involved in?
I’ve been working a lot with The Waldorf School of Orange County where my boys go to school. I’m also a big supporter of all the community health and education programs that Planned Parenthood provides. The mammogram screenings they provide for lower income women are essential.
10. Your dream day in Orange County?
A surf in the morning with my boys. Some Bear Flag for an early lunch. A Dixie Pop at my friend Chi Lin’s store, LMNOP (next door to Bear Flag). Head to the beach. Throw the baseball around.. play some beach volleyball til the sun sets. Go out for sushi.
11. Favorite place for breakfast?
My house. No one makes a smoothie and a scrammie like me! But my favorite breakfast spot is The Garden at The Four Seasons in New York.
12. What was the best day of your life?
I’ve got two of them: The days each of my boys arrived. I had two amazing home births…my husband caught them (with Lorri Walker, our midwife, supervising).
13. Last concert that you went to?
I’m a classic rock fan…I went to see Peter Frampton at The Greek play The 30th Anniversary Tour of Frampton Comes Alive.
14. Favorite vacation spot?
Probably Tavarua…I spend my days there doing yoga, scuba diving, surfing and stand-up paddle boarding. Sometimes I even fish or hit a few tennis balls… I sleep a lot, knit, hang out on the beach and swim in a warm water. And my husband is happy because he gets his surf fix. And the Fijian people are so warm and welcoming.
15. If you had to live somewhere else, where would you like to move?
Maybe Kaua’i…it’s magical there.
16. Favorite books?
I just read Game Change, so fascinating. But my favorite books are by Jane Austen. I love Pride & Prejudice and Northanger Abbey.
17. Favorite restaurants in Orange County?
Café Zoolu is an old favorite for a sit down dinner with my husband. Our family favorites are Bear Flag and Crow Burger Kitchen.
18. Biggest accomplishment?
My happy family.
19. What’s your biggest fear?
Something happening to the happy family.
20. Secret most people don't know about you
I’m a Texan, but I try to pass for native Cali.
