Waste To Waves at Mother’s Market
06.03.16
Mother’s Market and Kitchen in Costa Mesa is hosting a “styrofoam-to-surfboard” recycling drive, in support of SustainableSurf.org’s “Waste to Waves” program, Saturday and Sunday, June 4-5 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event is in honor of “World Oceans Day” June 8.
You can drop off recyclable styrofoam packaging foam and enjoy a musical performance by Joel Harper, musician and author of the children’s book All the Way to the Ocean on Saturday. The book aims to teach children about protecting and sustaining the environment. Harper is the brother of well-known folk/soul/bluesman, Ben Harper.
Everyone who brings foam to the event will be eligible to win raffle prizes from Enjoy Handplanes, Bureo Skateboards, Suga yoga mats, and Green Toys, which are all products made from recycled plastics and wetsuits. Surf Sweets gifts packs will also be given out.
The Surf Rider Foundation will be on-hand to educate attendees on additional ways to reduce plastic pollution from our beaches and waves. Sustainable Surf will showcase new surfboards made from recycled foam.
The collected polystyrene foam will be recycled by Marko Foam Blanks, into new surfboards and other products. This reduces the amount of waste going into landfills and the ocean. Only clean, white packaging styrofoam, such as the foam material used to protect fragile goods, like electronics, televisions and furniture, can be recycled.
