JoAnne Artman Gallery Presents: ALONG COMES MARY TOO
10.20.23
Laguna Beach's JoAnne Artman Gallery is thrilled to showcase ALONG COMES MARY TOO, an inspiring exhibition featuring the latest creations by Mary Finlayson now through November 30, 2023.
Mary Finlayson's artwork is a celebration of color, pattern, and form, brought to life through her unique use of gouache and vinyl emulsion. Exploring themes of home, memory, and self, her captivating still lifes and interiors offer a glimpse into the stories that our environments reveal about our identities.
Each interior space is treated like a portrait with its own narrative, unveiling the tales that lie within. By flattening the perspective, her still lifes provide an intimate peek into curated spaces, capturing both the essence of the scene and the movement within. Energetic lines breathe life into otherwise static settings and floral arrangements, while her simplified yet intricate forms create a distinct and captivating style.
Drawing inspiration from iconic artists like David Hockney, Henri Matisse, and Stuart Davis, Finlayson employs bold color palettes, repetitive patterns, and simplified shapes. Combining her background in printmaking and painting, she skillfully layers and contrasts colors to craft tightly constructed compositions that are uniquely her own. Her meticulous approach involves thoughtful consideration of personal connections, perspective, and the emotions captured within each scene, resulting in environments that blend reality with imagination, weaving captivating narratives through her art.
Mary Finlayson, an artist, teacher, and art therapist, resides and creates in San Francisco. Her artistic journey includes a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Queen's University, a Graduate Degree in Art Therapy from the Vancouver Art Therapy Institute, and an Arts Education Degree from the University of British Columbia.
