Everyday Earth Day for Kids

As Earth Day approaches, Reena B. Patel (LEP, BCBA) renowned parenting expert, licensed educational psychologist, board-certified behavior analyst, and author of Winnie & Her Worries shares tips on how to make Recycling, Reusing, Reduce fun for kids.
- Introduce the importance at a young age, model it, and make it fun.
- Identify ‘Trash Day’ and the different bins you put outside for weekly pick up. Start with what goes in where….(paper, glass, plastic, etc.). Have your child draw them on paper. When they are seen in a visual on paper, they can identify, relate to and retain their shapes, colors and uses better.
- Craft it out. Share the importance of reusing and recycling household items by making it into art and play. This process also encourages re-use, develops imagination, and promotes creativity.
- Where does trash go? Show them and discuss this. Ask your child how can we manage waste? Use a recycled water canister, use a washable cloth vs paper napkin etc.
- Teach a concrete lesson on how to use less. For example, we all take more than we need on our plate. Teach by starting with small portions and then if we want more we take more. So, we don’t waste.
- Keep plastic bags to reuse again and again or use reusable grocery bags so you don't get the extra charge too. Help your child choose school supplies, like notebooks and pencil cases, made from recycled goods.
- Look up the recycling guidelines in your family, print it out and post it near your kitchen. Spread awareness within your community. Make a scavenger hunt to look for items to pick up, beach ocean up, etc.
- Upcycle! Look for items in your house with your kids that you can donate so others can reuse.
- Clean up the community! Research beach and park clean ups, get your kids involved!

ABT-Segerstrom Center-“Uniting in Movement”

Segerstrom Center for the Arts and American Ballet Theatre proudly announces UNITING IN MOVEMENT, an exciting project bringing 18 dancers together for safe collaboration and exhilarating performance. ABT, America’s National Ballet Company®, has been in residence at the Center since March 22, rehearsing this new program that will receive its world premiere before a live audience on Sunday, April 25 in Segerstrom Hall, followed by streaming on demand from May 12 – 26.
Uniting in Movement is comprised of three works by contemporary choreographers, each with very personal and unique visions for the future of ballet: Jessica Lang, Lauren Lovette, and Darrell Grand Moultrie. The program will also pay homage to ABT’s classical heritage with Grand Pas Classique, a virtuosic showcase of ballet technique. The performances will be the first in Segerstrom Hall since the shutdown of all live theater in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, just one week after the world premiere of ABT’s new production of Alexei Ratmansky’s Of Love and Rage.
The choreographs, dancers and ABT artistic staff have been living and rehearsing ina quarantined 'bubble,' isolating themselves at the Avenue of the Arts Costa Mesa A Tribute Portfolio Hotel across the street from the Center, venturing out only to rehearse in the Center studios and, ultimately, perform in Segerstrom Hall. All rehearsal and performance activity is adhering to strict medical and safety guidelines, with an initial quarantine and testing period prior to the start of ABT’s residency.
Complete performances will be recorded on Friday and Saturday, April 23 and 24, and streamed on demand May 12 – 26. Tickets are $25 per household. ABT will give a final performance of Uniting in Movement before a live audience on Sunday, April 25 at 1:30 pm. Seating will be limited and available in two-person, safely distanced pods. Ticket prices start at $50.
