Plant Based Eating: Indian Food with Indarra

02.18.22

The monthly plant-based eating classes continue at the Environmental Nature Center! Join the Indarra Modern Indian Cuisine at the ENC for a fun and informative Indian Food Cooking Demo on February 20, from 1 to 2:30 p.m.

Gather around as Savitur Badhwar from Indarra Indian Cuisine demonstrates how to create delicious and nutritious plant-based dishes with the unique flavors of India!

Plant-Based Eating Series: Plant-based or plant-forward eating helps reduce the risk of heart disease, diabetes, certain cancers (specifically colon, breast, and prostate cancer), and depression, all while improving mental and physical function! Plant-based diets also help the environment. It takes 11 times more energy and 100 times more water to produce animal protein than it does plant protein.

They’re not saying you need to go cold turkey on turkey – they’re just making it easier for you to eat more plants in 2022!

Registration is at encenter.org.

Polly’s Pies Celebrates 50 Years in Long Beach

02.18.22

When brothers Eddie and Don Sheldrake opened their third Polly’s Pie location in Long Beach’s California Heights neighborhood in winter of 1972, Richard Nixon was president, the Oldsmobile Cutlass was the most popular car on the highway and gas was 36-cents a gallon. Since then, we’ve elected nine U.S. Presidents, gas is through the roof and Oldsmobile no longer exists, however, the  Sheldrake brothers are still going strong with 13 Polly’s Pies locations.

A public celebration marking the 50th anniversary of Polly’s Pies in Long Beach will take place starting at 4 p.m. on February 23 through February 27.

The first 200 people to arrive at Polly’s Pies (Long Beach location only) on February 23 after 4 p.m. will receive a signature swag bag that includes a mug, gourmet coffee packs, keychain, mini pie box mystery offer (free bakery items, 20% off purchase, etc.), pie cutter, jam and more.

“It’s really unusual for a restaurant to remain open in the same location for half a century,” said James Kaa, CEO of Polly’s Pies. “And to have a legacy restaurant still owned by its founders is really quite remarkable. We’re extremely excited to celebrate this milestone with our guests.”

The first 500 people to dine-in at the Long Beach location on February 23 after 4 p.m and February 24 will enjoy:

Pollyburgers for $2.50

Three-stack pancakes for $1.50

Pie slices for $1

50-cent coffee

The restaurant is located at 3490 Atlantic Avenue just north of the 405 Freeway in the Cal Heights area.  For more information, call 562.595.5651 or visit online at pollyspies.com.
