The Philharmonic Society of Orange County is celebrating its 64th season, with 29 performances by some of the world’s most celebrated artists and ensembles. The Society continues to expand its programming beyond its signature classical music presentations with multidisciplinary offerings and holiday performances. Thanks to the Donna L. Kendall Foundation, the Society will continue the Donna L. Kendall Classical Series for its ninth season, and the Henry T. Segerstrom Legacy Series sponsored by Elizabeth Segerstrom for its third season. The Society also thanks Mr. Sam B. Ersan for his generous sponsorship of the Laguna Chamber Music Series, along with Judith and Howard Jelinek for their sponsorship of the Eclectic Orange Series.
“Our upcoming season offers a rich abundance of incredible, unparalleled musical experiences. Not only do we have the world’s leading orchestras and soloists but we also have cutting-edge multidisciplinary works that combine music, dance and film,” says President and Artistic Director John Mangum. “It’s a lineup you won’t find anywhere outside of a handful of the world’s cultural capitals and we’re proud to bring these projects to Orange County’s stages.”
Among the highlights of the Society’s 2017-18 season are nine orchestral presentations, five of which feature international touring orchestras, including the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra appearing with pianist Denis Matsuev and led by Valery Gergiev; the Royal Philharmonic with pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet led by Charles Dutoit; and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment in an all-Beethoven program featuring violinist Nicola Benedetti and conducted by Marin Alsop. American orchestras include the Chicago Symphony Orchestra conducted by Riccardo Muti; Los Angeles Philharmonic led by violinist Itzhak Perlman; San Francisco Symphony featuring violinist Gil Shaham and conducted by Michael Tilson Thomas; and the Boston Pops conducted by Keith Lockhart. The season also marks the return of internationally acclaimed artists such as violinist Joshua Bell and pianists Lang Lang and Yuja Wang.
The Society continues to expand its holiday offerings, bringing back the Canadian Brass for its fourth consecutive season, and presenting “A Swingin’ Big Band Christmas” as well as the Bach Collegium Japan Chorus and Orchestra led by Masaaki Suzuki performing Bach’s Christmas Oratorio.
The 2017-18 season also marks the continuation of the Society’s Eclectic Orange offerings, with a co-presentation with Segerstrom Center for the Arts of the 1931 cinematic horror classic Dracula with soundtrack performed live by composer-pianist Philip Glass and the Kronos Quartet, as well as a performance by pianist Joyce Yang in collaboration with the Aspen Santa Fe Ballet in which Yang shares the stage with dancers from the ballet company in interactive works.
The Philharmonic Society continues its second season at the new Musco Center for the Arts at Chapman University with three incredible classical performances presented by the Philharmonic Society and Musco Center. Performances will include Circa Ensemble’s award-winning production, Il Ritorno; a recital by Grammy-winning pianist Yefim Bronfman; and a performance by the Berlin Philharmonic Piano Quartet. “We’re excited to deepen our partnership with the Musco Center and work together to bring great music to an even wider audience, broadening the Philharmonic Society’s reach,” said Mangum.
