Musco Center Opens 2021-22 Season with High-Energy Latin Fusion Outdoor Concert

Musco Center Presents
Ozomatli with La Misa Negra
Aitken Arts Plaza

Saturday, September 25, 2021
Gates 2 p.m.; La Misa Negra 3 p.m.; Ozomatli 4:30 p.m.

“Ozomatli is more than a band. They represent our diverse culture.” - Mikey Jayy; Where Music Meets the Soul

Afro-Latin rhythms, reggae, hip hop, rock, and cumbia collide in the musical fusion created by high-energy, socially-conscious bands Ozomatli and La Misa Negra. Ozomatli, a Grammy Award-winning Southern California favorite, and openers La Misa Negra from Oakland, perform groovy, beat-based dance music with the ease of reggae and the boldness of punk rock, a joyful concoction that makes everyone feel at home. Step out onto the Aitken Arts Plaza to dance to this blending of cultures.

Bring your blankets or lawn chairs. Food is available from onsite food trucks, or you can bring a picnic.

Tickets for Ozomatli and the 2021-22 Season visiting artist performances and events are on sale now at muscocenter.org or by calling 844-OC-MUSCO (844-626-8726).

About Ozomatli

Created in 1995 in Los Angeles, Ozomatli has become known for their Latin fusion style and their activism through music. The six-piece band plays a unique, energetic mix of salsa, funk, jazz, reggae, rap, and rock.

About La Misa Negra

A seven-piece band from Oakland, California, La Misa Negra has a loyal following thanks to their danceable brew of cumbia music and Afro-Latin rhythms. Their performances explode with energy and infectious dance grooves created by punk rock influences, horn and accordion riffs, and a relentless rhythm section.

About Musco Center for the Arts

Musco Center for the Arts at Chapman University returns to in-person public performances with expanded Leap of Art Residency programs led by Micaela Taylor, Kishi Bashi, Marc Bamuthi Joseph, Daniel Bernard Roumain, and Chloe Arnold; more events on the open-air Bette and Wylie Aitken Arts Plaza like the Mostly Blues Festival with Keb’ Mo’ and Heartbeat of Mexico Festival; and increased cross-campus programs that amplify the passions of the University and further classroom engagement.

This season Musco Center pursues a bolder programming strategy including performances by artists creating and performing works that explore contemporary social, cultural, and intellectual ideas and challenges, often while raising the narratives of people whose stories have not been fully voiced.
