Musco Center Presents
Kishi Bashi in Concert
Saturday, October 23, 2021 | 7:30 p.m.
Virtuoso violinist and singer Kishi Bashi, whose radiant, uplifting soundscapes have been hailed as "pocket symphonies steeped in classical playing and 21st Century pop,” returns to the Musco Center for the Arts at Chapman University by popular demand to perform new songs and extended compositions.
The Saturday, October 23 concert caps Kishi Bashi's weeklong "WWII Japanese-American Incarceration Memory Project," a Musco Center 'Leap of Art Residency' with students and faculty, including Master Classes, a live-streamed panel on Japanese spirituality at Fish Interfaith Center, and a free, live public panel “Remembering the Incarceration” discussion moderated by Chapman University professors Dr. Stephanie Takaragawa and Dr. Rei Magosaki on October 20 at Beckman Hall 404.
Kishi Bashi, whose Musco Center appearances in recent years have earned him a devoted following, is a favorite of NPR's Tiny Desk Concert program, and NPR’s Bob Boilen host of "All Songs Considered" said that out of some 1,300 songs previewed for All Songs Considered one year, Kishi Bashi was the one musician "we all agreed was a must-see at SXSW: He didn't disappoint."
In this highly anticipated concert return of Kishi Bashi, he will be accompanied by a string trio, electric banjo player Mike "Tall Tall Trees" Savino, and a side-by-side string ensemble comprised of professional musicians and Chapman and Orange County School of the Arts students. They will perform music from his upcoming Emigrant EP as well as his 2019 album, Omoiyari. Other recent work that may be performed includes the uplifting orchestral score of Stillwater, the Apple-Plus children’s series, which he composed with Toby Chu.
Tickets are now available for the Musco Center Presents Kishi Bashi in Concert, Saturday, October 23 at 7:30 p.m., as well as reservations for the free October 20 panel discussion at muscocenter.org or by calling 844-OC-MUSCO (844-626-8726).
