A Helpful SPIN!

Enjoy a meaningful and fun evening out Sunday at 5 p.m. at “A” Restaurant in support of OC’s homeless served by SPIN (Serving People in Need).

It’s a celebrity bartender night featuring happy hour prices at the bar from 5 to 8 p.m., and SPIN plate special dinner prepared by Chef Vartan Abgaryan for $25. From each prix-fixe dinner, $10 will be donated to the cause.

Local celebrities in attendance will include Alexis Bellino of “The Real Housewives of Orange County.” In addition to placing the homeless in housing, SPIN  serves citizens struggling with substance abuse, and offers more than 23,380 meals to people living on the street.

A Restaurant is at 3334 W Coast Hwy in Newport Beach. 949.650.6505.

Use Heat for Good!

solar ovensUtilize the sun’s energy and enjoy solar oven-baked goodies at a workshop Saturday from 1 to 3 p.m. at Center for Living Peace in Irvine. It’s crazy to consider that enough sunlight falling on the earth in one hour could provide enough energy in one year to meet global demands. Learn more at the Ecology Center’s lesson on solar oven construction Saturday from 1 to 3 p.m. Everyone will go home with their own solar oven. We hear that solar ovens  can cook just about anything conventional ovens can. Sign up here, and Sabrina Talukder at stalukder@goodhappens.org can answer any questions.

Mobile Master!

Alexander CalderWe love this mobile master! Orange County Museum of Art will be the exclusive West Coast venue for "Alexander Calder and Contemporary Art: Form, Balance, Joy," starting Sunday through Sept. 4. The exhibit features 30 of Calder’s classic mobiles—kinetic sculptures perfectly balanced; stabiles—monolithic abstract sculptures; and bronze sculptures.

There will also be major works by seven contemporary artists who were influenced by Calder’s structure, balance, and expressive artworks. At the opening day event, the museum opens from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; with a curator talk at 1 p.m.; and select contemporary artists will discuss their works in a series of short talks throughout the museum’s galleries from 1:30 to 3 p.m.

850 San Clemente Drive in Newport Beach. 949.759.1122.
