Rivian Revives Laguna Beach Historic Theater as Its Premier Flagship Retail Space

Rivian, the American electric vehicle manufacturer, just unveiled its premier retail space, Rivian South Coast Theater, in Southern California. This flagship store, situated at 160 South Coast Highway in Laguna Beach, close to Rivian's Irvine headquarters, marks the company's 11th launch this year and its third in California. Rivian South Coast Theater, sprawling over 11,000 square feet, is not only the largest of its kind but also doubles as a hub for the community, offering a mix of vehicle showcases, creative events, and theater programs.

Originally the New Lynn Theater since 1935, this site has undergone extensive restoration, carefully preserving its historical essence while integrating modern elements. The theater's original architecture, including the marquee, ticket booth, lobby, balcony, auditorium, and the 129-seat theater area, have been meticulously conserved. Rivian's restoration efforts, in collaboration with preservationists and community leaders, led to the theater's recognition on the National Register of Historic Places in March 2023.

The theater also serves a cultural purpose, partnering with the Coast Film Foundation, a Laguna Beach non-profit, to screen films. This collaboration aims to showcase independent films that resonate with Rivian's mission of fostering a spirit of adventure and sustainability.

Rivian's approach to retail is unique, focusing on creating a relaxed, family-friendly space. The venue will feature their electric vehicles, the R1T pickup and R1S SUV, for an immersive experience. Additionally, the Gear Shop at the theater will offer Rivian-branded merchandise, local artisan products, and exclusive items from a collaboration with Almond Surfboards of Orange County. The on-site café, operated by Equator Coffees, will provide sustainably sourced coffee, pastries, and other menu items, marking the coffee company's first foray into Orange County.

The opening weekend will be open to the public, featuring activities like family art workshops by the Laguna College of Art and Design, with some events requiring reservations.
