OC’s FIRST and ONLY Zero-Waste Grocer

More than a grocery store, Amis de la Terre Market in Costa Mesa is a zero-waste market. Now, you can find your favorite organic pantry staples and health foods without contributing to the waste cycle. 

Amis de la Terre Market is the brainchild of newlyweds Jessica Walden and Chris McGuire, two graduate students of the UCI Ph.D. program in Earth System Science. After years of research on the ocean, while finding microplastics in water samples from local beaches, they decided to create an answer to eliminating plastic packaging from pantry staples that can have a dramatic impact on consumer plastic waste. 

At Amis de la Terre Market, you’re invited to bring in your own jars and weigh them empty at the scale station set up at the front of the shop. Then, you’ll receive a tag with an RFID chip on each jar that stores the weight of that jar, so you don’t have to remember it. They also offer jars or paper bags available to purchase.  You can fill your containers with flour, vinegar, nuts and seeds, spices and seasonings, dried fruits, grains, snacks and cereals, oils and vinegar, snacks, and much more. 

Popular items include nut butter, coffees, dates, organic hot cocoa mix, and delicious and nutritious pumpkin seeds. 

The shop is self-service or they can fill all your containers for you.

Open 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday to Friday; 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
