Hit Me With Your Best Shot!

Tequila

When it comes to reviewing tequila, we’re naïve. Yes, we’ve had our share of tequila shots, margaritas and tequila sunrises (in the 80s!), and even  sipped and ate our way through delicious tequila dinners at Sol Cocina and tastings at Hi-Time in Costa Mesa.

However, we hardly could call ourselves tequila experts. We leave that to the good people who actually live the life, visit  distilleries and agave fields in Mexico, can taste the difference between tequila that is made from lowland and highland agave plants, and take the time to enjoy the complex liquor.

We do know tequila should be sipped and enjoyed like a fine wine, not just enhaled from a shot glass. So this brings us to an Orange County-based tequila company, Peligroso (Spanish for "dangerous") that’s setting itself apart from other premium tequila brands by growing and harvesting pure Weber Blue agave on a private estate in the highlands of Jalisco without herbicides or pesticides and making a traditional style tequila at 42% alcohol by volume (84 proof).

Peligroso was a standout at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition Award with its Silver 42 taking home a gold medal.

Peligroso also stands out for its unique presentation with each variety poured into a different bottle. The Silver 42 is bottled in a crystal clear flint glass to signify its purity; the Reposado 42 comes in a rustic finished glass to to match the golden aged tequila (six to eight months in white oak barrels); and the Añejo 42 comes in a satin black glass bottle representing the aged (12 to 18 months) tequila.

Priced from $40 to $60 available locally at Hi-Time Wine Cellars and Spirits in Costa Mesa, 250 Ogle St. in Costa Mesa. 949.650.8463. Or find it at at BevMo in Huntington Beach, Irvine, Costa Mesa, Ladera Ranch, and Orange.
