Little of this, little of that

So it’s a little bit of the Kinks, a little of the Beatles, a little bit of the Band—and we’re serious when we say that. Why else would Ray Davies (head Kink) handpick Los Angeles’ the 88 to join him on his North American tour?

Formed in 2003, the 88 is a four piece made up of Keith Slettedahl (vocals, guitar), Adam Merrin (keys), Todd O’Keefe (bass) and Anthony Zimmitti (drums). We first caught the 88 live years and years ago at Sunset Junction in 2004—they were easily one of the most energetic bands there, let alone one of the most energetic bands we’ve seen in a long time.

Their Brit Pop sensibilities shine through particularly live on stage—if you’re looking for a good time, this is the show. Just check out “All ‘Cause of You,” just a thoroughly feel good track with the catchiest hooks, McCartney basslines and piano melodies. “Coming Home” isn’t far behind on the adorable catchy scale—with Slettedahl’s genuine vocals paired with a cheery tune, it’s hard not to fall in love with the 88.

The 88: Thurs., 9 p.m., $5. Detroit Bar, 843 W. 19th St., Costa Mesa, 949.642.0600. 21+.
