3rd Annual Excellence in Journalism Day

The 3rd Annual Excellence in Journalism Day will be celebrated on Saturday, December 3 from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Argyros Forum at Chapman University. It’s a rare chance and great opportunity to learn from and be inspired by two dozen award-winning professionals. It’s a FREE event that’s open to students, professionals, academics and the public.
Workshop topics include:
10 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. Breaking News; The Rise of Investigative News Sites; Race & Society; Surviving and Thriving as A TV News Reporter: Turning Boring Reports into Memorable Stories: Narratives revisited;
11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Speaking of Sports, What’s the Next Digital Disruption in Journalism?; Terror & Tragedy: The San Bernardino Massacre; Narratives Revisited:
1:15 p.m. to 2:30 pm. Party Like a Journalist: Night Crawlers: Chasing news; Accountability: Digging into Politics and Government; and The Big Picture” Who’s Reinventing Journalism?
A Showcase Panel, entitled “Is Objectivity Dead?” at 2:30 to 4 p.m.
The recent presidential campaign brought into sharper focus the debate over usefulnessof the “objectivity” method practiced by mainstream news organizations for decades. Is objectivity still an essential cornerstone of journalism? Are there alternate ways to serve audiences, say, with more analysis, or does point-of- view with transparency better serve readers?

Sally French works for Dow Jones, leading social media MarketWatch.com, where she also reports on drone news.
Jeff Gottlieb shared the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service Reporting in 2011 for uncovering widespread corruption in the Southern California city of Bell.
