New Experiences: Stand-Up Paddle Boarding

07.02.15

By Mimi Ngo

In the wake of warmer weather, I wanted to partake in an activity revolving around the beach or water that didn’t involve napping on the sand or fighting for metered parking.  I had never tried stand up paddle boarding or (SUP) before and thought it would be a great way to burn some calories while getting my salt water fix.

I had found a Groupon for Wayward Captain Watersports which offered kayaking, SUP, and boat rentals. Since I had rented a kayak with them before, I thought I would return this year and try my hand at SUP.

Wayward Captain Watersports was easy to find and offered free parking.  It is located right behind American Junkie on the docks.

The staff is friendly both in person and on the phone.  They offered basic instructions for a first-timer like myself and helped me adjust the paddle to fit my stature.

After being helped on to my board, I began to push my way out into the Newport Bay.  It takes a minute to get your sea legs.  Keeping knees unlocked will assure a more graceful ride.

SUPing allows your whole body to be engaged, gives you a new view by standing on top of the water rather than seated low in a kayak and offers a glimpse of some marine life down below.  I also found myself feeling very relaxed while gliding through the harbor.

If you’re looking to relax and enjoy a coastal activity without having to vacuum sand out of your car after, try your hand at stand up paddle boarding.
