Film, Art and the Search for a Cure!
10.26.11
Chances are you know someone who has diabetes or your life is affected by it. Thankfully, researchers and scientists are dedicating their lives to finding a cure. On Thursday, Nov. 3 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Mary & Dick Allen Diabetes Center at Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach, join award-winning documentary filmmakers Lisa Hepner and Guy Mossman of Vox Pop Films for an evening of art, film and discussion about exciting developments in the quest to cure type 1 diabetes.
The filmmakers (Lisa Hepner is a type 1 diabetic) are working on a feature documentary, entitled "Patient 13," that follows Scott King – scientist, entrepreneur and type 1 diabetic – at the climax of his 30-year quest to cure diabetes.
The evening will also include an art exhibit featuring an artist’s perspective of Type-1 diabetes. All participating artists are affected or connected to diabetes, including Shepard Fairey, Zoey Stevens, Greg Craola Simkins, and Anthony Ausgang.
Special guests include Dr. Jonathan Lakey from UC Irvine School of Medicine and co-pioneer of the Edmonton Protocol and Scott King, president of Islet Sheet Medical. Delicious foods from Avanti Café in Costa Mesa will be served.
Starting Nov. 3, the filmmakers are also launching a Kickstarter Campaign - an online service used by filmmakers for fundraising - to raise $30,000 in 30 days for "Patient 13."

Wear to Where: Versace for H&M
10.26.11
H&M just announced that its fall 2011 designer collaboration will be with one of the world’s most legendary fashion brands, Versace. Designed by its creative director Donatella Versace, the exclusive collection will recall the vibrant heritage of the brand, complete with leather, prints, color and exuberance in exclusive materials at fantastic H&M prices. The collection will include lines for both women and men and selected pieces for the home. The US will release the collection on November 19th in select stores and it will available in about 300 stores worldwide.
A brand steeped in glamour to its core, Versace was founded in 1978 by Gianni Versace, his daring dresses and wild iconography revolutionized fashion, creating provocative styles in classical themes, all cut with an impeccable eye for design. Since 1997, Donatella Versace has continued Gianni Versace’s work as creative director, evolving the brand into a global fashion house at the forefront of what luxury means today. Famous worldwide for her signature wardrobe, Versace is the epitome of everything the House of Versace stands for.
But what I really love about this upcoming collection is that Versace has looked back to the archives to reinterpret classic Versace designs. The womenswear collection will be dominated by dresses that express the spirit of the season, featuring studded leather, silk and colorful prints, and accessories including high heels and costume jewelry. The men’s collection will focus on sharp tailoring, including the perfect tuxedo, as well as belts and jewelry for men. For the first time in a designer collaboration at H&M, the collection will include homeware pieces including pillows and bedspread.
