Prom dreams from Working Wardrobes

Prom Dreams

02.22.12

The next time you’re cleaning out a closet, consider helping Working Wardrobes outfit low-income high school seniors for their prom. Working Wardrobes is in need of donations of men's and women's prom apparel such as dresses, shoes, tuxedos, ties, pants, cumber buns and accessories to make the Dream Girls and Distinguished Gentlemen Prom Event on March 10, a reality for deserving teens. Participating students also will attend etiquette, self-esteem and life-choices workshops and be treated to a fashion show. Santa Ana councilmember Michelle Martinez will be a guest speaker at the event on March 10 from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Irvine Hilton Hotel.

To learn more, call 714.210.2460, or visit workingwardrobes.org/promdose.htm.

Wear to Where: Ember Arts

02.21.12

The stories that fashion usually tells are fantasy stories, which are fun and can make us feel good, but sometimes we want to connect to something real.

Ember Arts, a social company based in San Diego, sells beautiful jewelry backed by an amazing true story. Each piece of their colorful paper-bead jewelry is handmade by a small group of women in Uganda, located in east Africa, who survived extreme poverty as refugees in their own country.

Now, thanks to their partnership with Ember, these women are pursuing lifelong dreams: educating their children, building homes for their families, starting their own businesses, and more. They are transforming their families and communities.

On Tuesday, Ember launched their beautiful spring collection for 2012. With the launch they are featuring LA-based social entrepreneur Elena Bondar, who is building a program to support survivors of sex trafficking in Los Angeles. Ember is donating 50% of all their online sales for one month to Elena's organization, Two Wings.

Shop Ember's spring collection, and connect with them on Facebook. Or visit one of our favorite Southern California retailers: Urban Girl, Audrey's Closet at La Costa Resort, Blue Eyed Girl, Vromans, as well check out my website to find out how you can win a pair of their Plume Earrings.

And connect with Two Wings here.
