The Best Savory Sandwich

08.01.14

By Kelley Moody

Right among the bustling business towers in Costa Mesa before hitting South Coast Plaza and Segerstrom Center for the Arts, is a small café on Bristol Street near Paularino Avenue in Costa Mesa.

Upon entering, one would assume it to be nothing more but a typical stop for those working away who may have forgotten a lunch, but Le Café is one of Orange County’s best kept diner secrets.

Despite the deceiving location and appearance, I can quite honestly say to this day I crave just a bite of one of their delicious paninis. Anyone who knows me understands my extreme passion for a well pressed sandwich, especially if it involves avocado; however, due to my attachments, I expect only the best when it comes to these juicy lunch time meals, but I can promise that Le Café has far exceeded and set the bar for my standards.

I first found Le Café while working in that same business center, just across the way at PBS SoCal. I was shocked by the incredible food that was always fresh and always affordable—definitely the best pick-me-up one could ask for during a busy day.

There is always a small crowd of adoring and loyal customers around the shop who continue to return for more whether for breakfast or lunch. Though my time has ended at PBS SoCal, I still manage to venture back to this little deli as often as possible just to enjoy the tastes and humble atmosphere one more time.

Kev, the owner, and his friendly staff have been in this location for over 8 years now. Each week he specially designs a daily specials list for his loyal customers to make sure they are getting both the best quality and pricing around. His Italian lasagna with meat sauce was a recent one on the list, right next to the taco special and chicken fettuccine Alfredo. The wraps are also a crowd favorite. Kev does not seem to mind blending a few different cultures together to achieve one, marvelous and fulfilling taste.

My personal favorite is most certainly the turkey avocado panini. There is truly no other sandwich that I have ever come across that tastes quite as fresh or savory. Between the light pesto spread and the fresh slices of avocado mixed with melted cheese, tomato and fresh turkey, you will find your taste buds to be simply overwhelmed.

While this may not be a five star restaurant, it is certainly a quality stop to make if you’re looking for a healthier, affordable and enjoyable experience that will definitely keep you coming back for more.

Open 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. Closed Saturday and Sunday.

3070 Bristol St in Costa Mesa. 714.556.1949.
