The 10th Annual Brian Scalzo Memorial Kentucky Derby Party
05.01.17
You can come out for an amazing event in memory of Brian Scalzo to watch the Kentucky Derby on Saturday May 6 at 12 p.m. at the Balboa Pavilion, and most importantly to help raise funds to let kids be kids and live a pain free life without the daily struggles of pediatric cancer or type one diabetes. The 10th Annual Brian Scalzo Memorial Kentucky Derby Party is a benefit event for CHOC Pediatric Oncology and CHOC Pediatric Endocrinology. You can read about Brian and his family here.
Thanks to a generous donation from a sponsor, tickets have dropped in price from $100 to $75, to give more people the opportunity to experience the event.
Your general admission ticket ($75) includes an Exacta Square with additional squares available for purchase (think Super Bowl party pool with chance of winning half of the $4,000 pot), heavy hors d'oeuvres from Harborside Restaurant and two complimentary beverages, with Derby Specialty cocktails like "the Kentucky Dirty", "Hold Your Horses" and "Run For The Roses" available, along with beer, wine, and well drinks.
All proceeds after food and beverage costs go to charity.
You can join the after party at Cruisers on Balboa Boulevard at 4:30 p.m. Entertainment provided by Side Deal (Charlie Colin - Painbirds, Joel & Scott Owen - Pawnshop Kings, Stan Frasier and Murphy Karges - Sugar Ray), Critens and Cock Fight. Derby Tickets/Wristbands are necessary to attend this after party.
Tickets available here. And if you can’t attend, you can still support the cause here.
Balboa Pavilion is at 400 Main St. in Newport Beach.

OC Children’s Business Fair
04.28.17
The Orange County Rescue Mission is giving children an opportunity to learn the ins and outs of entrepreneurship. They'll host its second annual “OC Children’s Business Fair” on Saturday, April 29 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Rescue Mission’s Village of Hope in Tustin.
The Business Fair will feature 63 different booths, each hosted by children ages 6 - 14. Some of the participants currently live at the Rescue Mission’s Village of Hope, and others are bringing their entrepreneurial ideas from all over Orange County. The public is invited to attend the event free of charge, and can enjoy shopping at the various booths while interacting with Orange County’s youngest entrepreneurs.
“In addition to learning the basics of how to create their own business, these children are given valuable insights on important life skills, such as how to set a budget, create a business plan, and provide customer service,” says Jim Palmer, President of the Orange County Rescue Mission. “These principles provide essential building blocks that will help children understand that their dreams of success really are within reach.”
The OC Rescue Mission currently has a record-high number of children living on-site at the Village of Hope. “In recent months, we’ve received an astounding amount of support from the local community in helping provide these kids with basic necessities. Our hope is that the community will continue to give back by attending this event and supporting these children’s hard work and dedication,” Palmer says.
The OC Children’s Business Fair is being sponsored by the California Policy Center, ORCO Block & Hardscape, The Lincoln Club, Crevier Classic Cars, and several other generous donors from the local community.
