Ladies Luncheon Newport Beach benefiting CureDuchenne
08.23.24
CureDuchenne, a leading global nonprofit committed to funding research and finding a cure for Duchenne muscular dystrophy, is thrilled to announce the debut of the Ladies Luncheon Newport Beach at Shady Canyon Golf Club on Tuesday, October 15, 2024. This inaugural event promises a sophisticated afternoon filled with fashion, gourmet cuisine, and entertainment, all in support of raising crucial funds for research aimed at curing Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a debilitating neuromuscular disease.
In collaboration with South Coast Plaza, the Ladies Luncheon Newport Beach will showcase a luxury fashion presentation by Monique Lhuillier, providing guests with an exclusive first look at the hottest trends for 2025. Attendees are encouraged to embrace the event’s theme by wearing their most vibrant sundresses paired with either chic or playful hats, creating a stylish and unforgettable experience.
The event will also feature a gourmet luncheon, accompanied by exciting auctions where guests can bid on a selection of unique items and experiences, all contributing to a worthy cause.
Beyond the fashion and festivities, attendees will gain valuable insights into the groundbreaking research supported by CureDuchenne, with a special presentation from Dr. Michael Kelly, the organization’s Chief Scientific Officer. This gathering goes beyond celebrating style; it’s about making a significant difference. The funds raised will directly support CureDuchenne’s mission to invest in innovative research, offering hope to thousands of families impacted by this devastating disease.
Duchenne muscular dystrophy is one of the most prevalent and severe forms of muscular dystrophy, affecting approximately 1 in 5,000 male births. Children diagnosed with Duchenne face progressive muscle weakness, leading to loss of mobility and premature death. Although there is currently no cure, the research funded by CureDuchenne is paving the way for groundbreaking treatments and, ultimately, a cure.
Shady Canyon Golf Club on October 15, 2024 from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.

UC Irvine’s Beall Center for Art + Technology opens Future Tense: Art, Complexity, and Uncertainty
08.23.24
In partnership with the 2024 Getty PST ART initiative, UC Irvine's Beall Center for Art + Technology presents Future Tense: Art, Complexity, and Uncertainty, opening on August 24, 2024. This exhibition showcases contemporary artists exploring complex systems like global warming, neuroscience, and robotics through various mediums, including paintings, sculptures, and videos.
The exhibition features new work by artists like Laura Splan, Chico MacMurtrie, and Hege Tapio, commissioned by the Beall Center's Black Box Projects residency. It also includes pieces by artists such as Ralf Baecker and Julie Mehretu, engaging with the evolving field of Complexity Studies.
Future Tense emphasizes the need to understand the interconnected nature of today's challenges, moving beyond traditional scientific approaches. As exhibition curator David Familian states, "We can no longer afford to control nature but must learn to live within it."
Running from August 24 to December 14, 2024, Future Tense will feature artist talks, workshops, and performances. The Beall Center offers free admission and is open to the public Tuesday – Saturday, 12 noon – 6 p.m., during the academic year.
The exhibition will also include a satellite installation at UCSB's AlloSphere Research Facility, featuring Sketches of Sensorium, the final work by environmental art pioneer Newton Harrison. This interactive piece examines how natural and human activities shape oceanic conditions, offering a profound look at the forces affecting our planet's oceans.
