Tim McFerran

1. If you had to begin a different career, what would you do?
I like challenges and learning about new industries-- that’s why I picked skateboarding. At the time, I didn't know a lot about the industry. So I'd be up for anything. Maybe alternative fuels.
2. What’s your most prized possession?
Family.
3. Favorite drink?
Coke. But I try not to drink it often and opt for iced tea instead.
4. What are you cutting out because of the economy?
Newspapers and magazines. I get all my news online now and it saves natural resources.
5. Fantasy purchase?
NBA team.
6. What can’t you live without?
A good punch line.
7. What’s next on your “to do” list?
South America.
8. Biggest regret?
Sometimes I spend too much time working and not enough time playing
9. Cause that you’re most interested/involved in?
Maloof Skate & Donate – a program we put together with Vans and So Cal retailers to collect new and used skate shoes and skateboards for deserving kids in South Africa.
10. Your dream day in Orange County?
Spending time with family at any of the great OC attractions: the beach, Disneyland, Ducks, Angels…
11. Favorite place for breakfast?
The Good Day Café in HB
12. What was the best day of your life?
Everday.
13. Last concert that you went to?
My wife roped me into seeing Elton John and Leon Russell at the Palladium. It was for her birthday.
14. Favorite vacation spot?
South Africa. I've been several times because we're gearing up to host a huge skateboarding contest there. It's amazing. I'd highly recommend it.
15. If you had to live somewhere else, where would you like to move?
I have to say I really love it here. I do love Hawaii . . . except for the isolation. It would have to be some place with great weather and an airport close by. Wait. That's Orange County.
16. Favorite books?
I don’t really read fiction but I do love to read biographies and business books, like the Wisdom of Crowds James Surowieki.
17. Favorite restaurants in Orange County?
These are a little random, but Bistango’s and Taleo’s in Irvine. I eat at Taleo's almost every day.
18. Biggest accomplishment?
Bringing up two healthy and successful children.
19. What's your biggest fear?
Failure. And hitting my head on short doorways.
20. Secret most people don’t know about you?
I can do a mean “Running man.”
At 6’8”, Tim McFerran may be hard to miss, but he steers clear of the spotlight as he manages the top skateboarding event in the world: The Maloof Money Cup. A consumer products executive who was tapped by the Maloofs to run basketball camps in his spare time, Joe Maloof approached him with the idea of hosting a skateboarding camp in Southern California. Just four years after Tim and Joe Maloof envisioned a skate contest that would shake-up the industry, the Maloof Money Cup has grown to become “the world’s greatest skateboarding event.” From offering the largest prize purse in the history of skateboarding and building brand-new concrete skate plazas designed by pro skaters, to working closely with skaters and the industry to drive all aspects of the contest, the Maloof Money Cup has forever changed the face of skateboarding. Last year, Maloof Money Cup expanded to New York, leaving behind a permanent skate park for the community. This year, MMC adds a third U.S. city and goes international to Kimberley, South Africa, for the first-ever world skateboarding championships.
