New mask-sewing/public volunteer opportunity from Furnishing Hope!
04.06.20
Are you a quilter, seamstress, tailor, or other sewing professional – or perhaps, you just love to sew? If so, and if you’re looking for an opportunity to give back during this time, you’re in luck! Furnishing Hope, a local nonprofit organization in Orange County, has decided to lend out sewing machines and supplies to a limited number of individuals who are interested in sewing protective masks for the OC community.
There are a total of eight (8) sewing machines that will be lent out on a first-come, first-serve basis. Typically, these machines are used as part of Furnishing Hope’s National Pillow Project – a program that teaches low income, single parents transitioning from homelessness to independent housing how to sew, as a way to empower them to become self-sufficient and provide a better life for their family.
“We are happy to lend out our sewing machines out for as long as needed, and we also have designer fabric and thread we can supply to help each person get started,” said Beth Phillips, Founder and Executive Director of Furnishing Hope. “This is an opportunity for people to use their hobby or skill set to help the greater good and provide masks to those in need, and if our team can supply the materials needed in order to do that, we’re happy to do so.”
Furnishing Hope will allow volunteers to choose where they’d like to donate their masks – whether to a local hospital, the elderly, or other essential businesses or communities in need. If you or someone you know is interested in this opportunity, please email Cindy Griesemer at cindy@furnishinghope.org or call 949.419.4574.
Furnishing Hope is also doing home installations to get families into safe housing during this time and have an ongoing list of needs that people can help donate toward. More info here, furnishinghope.org/ways-to-give.
