‘The History of Black in Fashion’

The Decorative Arts Society welcomes fashion historian Carmela Spinelli on Tuesday, March 10 for her lecture on "The History of Black in Fashion" at Edwards Big Newport Theater. Doors open at 9 a.m.; Speaker Presentation from 9:45 a.m. to 11 a.m. In light of the community health precautions taken to address coronavirus concerns, the Decorative Arts Society is modifying our "light bite" breakfast buffet service to maximize food safety.

Carmela Spinelli is an international fashion and design professional with more than 20 years’ experience in fashion education and industry. Prior to joining Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), she served as Associate Chair of the Department of Fashion Design at Parsons School of Design under Tim Gunn. She was an executive at Céline and other retail development firms. She holds a master’s degree in the History of Decorative Art and Museum Studies.
Non-members can pay $75 per lecture at the door. $300 Annual Membership includes all five lectures, and one may join anytime throughout the year. (the fee is not pro-rated).

Orange County Transportation Authority Host Free Family Hike

Explore the great outdoors during a free family-friendly hike through Trabuco Rose Preserve on Saturday, April 5 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Hikers will enjoy a morning discovering the beauty of Trabuco Rose Preserve during a mild hike fit for feet of all sizes, as well as creating nature-related crafts and learning about the surrounding protected lands. All ages are welcome to attend, and activities are appropriate for children ages four and over. This short and easy hike is a half-mile one way. For those who want to trek the full-loop trail, the moderate hike is almost two miles.

Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. To register for the hike, visit preservingourlegacy.org. Space is limited and pre-registration is required. No strollers are permitted on the trail and all participants are required to sign a liability waiver. Minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Rain will cancel the event. 

The Trabuco Rose Preserve is a 396-acre parcel located northwest of the City of Rancho Santa Margarita in Trabuco Canyon. It’s bordered by the Cleveland National Forest to the north and Trabuco Creek to the south, while Hickey Creek drains the western side. The Preserve features rolling terrain with elevations ranging from 1,120 to 1,650 feet above mean sea level.
